London Gateway has seen the first phase of its construction awarded to joint venture winners Laing O’Rourke and Dredging International.
The £400 million contract is the first to be signed by DP World for the project and will see the development of the port quay.
When completed, the port will move 50 percent more containers in the same time as its competitors, making it the most productive and efficient port in the world.
Simon Moore, Chief Executive of London Gateway, said that the contract was a major milestone. He added that it would bring relief to international shipping lines, which are currently experiencing congestion in the UK’s ports.
DP World is planning to integrate the container port with a logistics park, reducing the need for goods to travel inland. It is estimated that the project will deliver 12,000 new skilled jobs in the Thames Gateway regeneration area.
London Gateway will be located at Stanford-le-Hope and work will begin on the 1,850 acre site later this year. The first ships are expected to arrive in early 2011.
